At a Glance:

This book won the 2012 Caldecott Medal.  My son LOVES this book.  I mean, he really loves this book.  There’s a really great reason it received the Caldecott — it’s excellent.  The illustrations are beautiful and (clearly) skillfully done.  If you haven’t checked this book out, please do.  It’s a deceptively simple book that lends itself to lots of imaginative play.  My son cannot seem to get enough of this book.  We highly, highly recommend it.

Summary:

Daisy loves her red ball.  She plays with it all the time and even naps with it.  One day, Daisy and her human go to the park where her precious ball is accidentally popped by her friend.  Daisy is devastated.  However, on Daisy’s next visit to the park she is greeted with a new ball by her friend.  All is then right with her world.

Our Experience Reading this Book:

We’ve looked through this wordless picture book about a dozen times in the past day followed by various reenactments of the story.  On one rereading of this book my son started shouting at the pictures on the page saying, “Oh no!  The dog popped her ball!”  My son then wanted to read it himself and he “reread” it to me several times.  What’s really fun is that each time we’ve reread this book the story changes a little.  It’s a perfect picture book for him and a delight for me to read with him.
