{STEM Friday} Oscar and the Bird: A Book about Electricity by Geoff Waring

OscarandtheBirdOscar and the Bird:  A Book about Electricity by Geoff Waring.  Ages 2+ (Publisher says 4+, but seriously, 2+ works). Candlewick. Reprint Feb. 2011. 32 pages.  ISBN: 978-0763653026 $6.99 (paperback)

The Short: This is an amazing book.  It gives a great description of electricity and clearly talks about how electricity works in a simple, but accurate way.  I was blown away by this book.  My two-year-old son wanted to read it over and over and over again.  Once we finished my son was able to give a basic breakdown about what electricity is and how it works.  We highly, highly recommend this book!

The Long:  The illustrations are fantastic.  The illustrations consist of large pictures that are easy to follow and illustrate what is being described in the text.  The text is a conversation between a cat and a bird discussing what electricity is and how it works.  I’ve tried to read through several books with my son about science but he will often times lose interest.  However, this book discusses electricity in a conversational style between two animals that keeps him engaged and interested in the material.  He loves it and I love reading it to him.  I couldn’t be happier with this book.

Geoff Waring has also written several other books in this series that look fantastic.  We read through Oscar and the Bat:  A Book about Sound this morning and my son was equally engaged and interested in it.  I’m looking forward to reading all the books in this series.

Where Obtained:  Public Library.
