New to Us Books for this Week:

 The Deductive Detective by Brian Rock and Illustrated by Sherry Rogers

This is a fun mystery for children!  The Deductive Detective is on the hunt for the cake thief.  Using only his incredible powers of deduction he is able to figure out who stole one of the cakes from the cake contest!  This book led to a lot of discussions among me, my son, and my husband.  I’ll be writing up a full review of this one later this week.

What To Do About Alice?  by Barbara Kerley and Illustrated by Edwin Fotheringham

I learned about this book from kidlitfrenzy.com‘s Nonfiction Picture Book Wednesday and I love this book!  My son has asked me to read it to him several times.  He’s been asking me lots of questions about Theodore Roosevelt and his daughter, Alice like — “Is Theodore Roosevelt a man?  Does he like dogs?  Is Alice his daughter?  Is she a woman?  Does she like books?”  It’s been a lot of fun.  I’m so glad I discovered this book from Kidlitfrenzy.com.

  Don’t Lick the Dog:  Making Friends with Dogs by Wendy Wahman

This is a very funny and very informative book to read to my son on how to approach and interact with dogs.  We’ve really enjoyed it.

 Guess Again!  by Mac Barnett and Illustrated by Adam Rex

Just when you think you know what the answer is going to be — you learn you need to guess again!  The whole family thought this was fun!

  Willoughby and the Moon by Greg Foley

An absolutely beautiful and sweet book about a young boy, Willoughby, helping a snail on the moon.

 The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins by Barbara Kerley with drawings by Brian Selznick

  There are all kinds of amazing things to learn about Waterhouse Hawkins and his drawings and models of dinosaurs.  A truly fascinating read!

 Lon Po Po:  A Red-Riding Hood Story from China by Ed Young

Instead of Little Red Riding Hood going to grandma’s house — the wolf comes to her and her family.  It was pretty spooky, but very well done.

  The Day Louis Got Eaten by John Fardell

A monster swallows Louis whole!  Then another monster swallows the monster that swallowed Louis whole!  Then another monster swallows the monster that swallowed the monster that swallowed Louis whole!  Fortunately, Louis has a very smart and resourceful sister who helps him escape — in one piece.

 Homer by Elisha Cooper

A sweet, sweet book about a dog being content being at home.  It’s a lovely book to read again and again.

Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs:  Missing Treasure by Giles Andreae and Illustrated by Russell Ayto

It’s another Captain Flinn book and my son loves this one as much as he loves the first one.  In this one we learned about a Giganotosaurus!

 Big Wolf & Little Wolf:  The Little Leaf that Wouldn’t Fall by Nadine Brun-Cosme and Illustrated by Olivier Tallec

We love the Big Wolf & Little Wolf books.  This one is a beautiful story about two friends waiting for a leaf to fall.

 You Can’t Take a Balloon Into the Metropolitian Museum by Jacqueline Preiss Weitzman and Robin Preiss Glasser

This is an amazing wordless picture book.  My son and I really enjoyed it.  I’ve also been pleasantly surprised by the comments my son has made since we’ve been reading this book.  We saw a statue of a man awhile ago and my son said, “Look, it’s Perseus!” which is one of the statues in this book.  I was floored.  I found out there are more books by these authors and I can’t wait to read them.

 The Little Jester by Helena Olofsson

This book really surprised us.  It’s about a jester that arrives at a monastery one night cold and hungry.  Not only does he entertain the monks, he also makes a picture of the crying Madonna smile.  It’s a miracle!  A sweet and lovely book.

 Toads on Toast by Linda Bailey and Illustrated Colin Jack

In this book a fox wants to create better meals for himself.  While reading through some cookbooks, he finds that he should be using young toads.  He goes out into the swamp and captures several young toads.  Just as the young toads are about to be cooked up, the toads’ mother steps in, saves their lives, and introduces the fox to the deliciousness that is toad-in-the-hole.  All the young toads are spared and the fox enjoys a yummy toad-free meal.  The book concludes with a great recipe for adults and kids to try!
