At first all I could think was — are these photographs that have been photoshopped? The pictures were so clear and bright. I was amazed when I read at the end of the book (in the fine print):
“Bill Thomson embraced traditional painting techniques and meticulously painted each illustration by hand, using acrylic paint and colored pencils. His illustrations are not photographs or computer generated images.”
If you click here you can see pictures from the book on his website. They’re really impressive.
My son and I have read this book over and over again. It is a wordless picture book about some children who find some chalk in a park on a rainy day. The children begin drawing with the chalk and discover that whatever they draw comes to life.
My son can now describe what is going on page by page. He’ll also sit down and “read” this story to himself. This is the first book of his that I’ve read and I’m looking forward to reading other books by him.
