Kel Gilligan’s Daredevil Stunt Show. by Michael Buckley; illus. by Dan Santat. Ages 2+. Abrams Books For Young Readers. September 2012. 40 pages. ISBN: 978-1-4197-0379-9 $16.95
The Short: This book is VERY funny. I laughed hard through multiple readings. My son had me read it to him several times. I have no doubt that we’ll be reading it over and over again. We highly, highly recommend this book.
The Long: Meet Kel Gilligan the daredevil. He performs such scary stunts as eating broccoli, using the potty of doom, getting dressed all by himself, taking a bath, and my favorite… keeping himself busy while his mother finishes her phone conversation. It’s beautiful! The illustrations are dazzling and the honesty that this book conveys is astounding.
Because of this book my son has started dressing and undressing himself — without me having to ask him. He’s also been running around quoting the book saying, “Don’t worry, folks, I know what I’m doing.” What a great thing to hear him say! It’s a lot of fun hearing him quote this book.
It’s a fantastic book to read aloud and this book speaks to both the adult and the child. This book is having a very positive influence on my son and appears to be encouraging him to be more independent. Kel Gilligan’s Daredevil Stunt Show is a huge hit at our house.
There’s nothing I feel compelled to edit or change when reading this book to my two-year-old son.
