In I AM HERMES! by Caldecott Medalist Mordicai Gerstein readers are treated to a hilarious, fast paced, and absorbing story about the messenger and hilariously naughty Hermes.
Over the course of sixty-eight spirited pages, we learn about the birth of Hermes, his crazily orchestrated shenanigans as a child, how quickly he grew up, his many inventions, his adventures, his job as a messenger, how he fell in love, his child’s adventures, his grandchild’s adventures, and what he’s doing now. It is a magical and fantastical whirlwind of a reading experience.
With it’s masterful storytelling and dazzling illustrations, I AM HERMES! is an ideal example of a perfect picture book. When I finished reading it the first time my eldest son looked a bit awe-struck and said, “Wow, that was so good!”

I don’t want to build it up too much, but I truly cannot recommend I AM HERMES! highly enough. The energy, the pacing, the illustrations, the colors, the twists and surprises, the length of the book, that it’s told from Hermes’ perspective, the graphic-novel-in-a-picture-book format, the fact that it is completely hilarious, and how much you learn when reading it — is all brilliant.

I AM HERMES! is also hands down my youngest son’s favorite book. I have never seen him respond to anything like I have seen him respond to this book. He carries this book with him from room to room, I find him reading this book to himself all the time, if I asked him what he wants to do, he says, “Read I AM HERMES! to me,” and he has fallen asleep holding this book twice now. What can I say? The child is in love. I wish for every child in the world to have a book they love as much as my youngest son loves this book.

When I read this book to him he laughs that incredible laugh that kids have that as a parent makes your heart almost feel like it’s going to burst. Every time we finish reading it he gives this dramatic sigh and says, “That was such a wonderful book.” This book in so many ways really does feel like a gift from the gods. I could easily go on and on about the merits and joys of this picture book – but I’d rather you go read it yourself. I really think you’re going to love it.

This looks so good! I love the pictures, and I think I would have loved reading a picture book in this format when I was a child. Thank you for the review!
