Little Dog Lost: The True Story of a Brave Dog Named Baltic by Monica Carnesi

This book has been nominated for a 2012 Cybils Award and I’m so glad!  We picked it up from the library today and read it a few times.

This is the story about how a dog, Baltic, was rescued after being trapped on a ice floe for two days.  It is a very suspenseful story and it had my son engaged.  It is nicely illustrated, but its strength is in how well it is told.  The story is very simple and straight-forward, so my 26 month old son can easily understand it.  But what creates the suspense in this book is how well placed the questions are in this book.  At one part specifically, it says, “But Dog slips.  He falls into the water.  Oh no! Where is Dog?”  My son is pointing and shouting, “There he is! Mama, they need to save him!” (Don’t worry, sweet boy, they will.)

It’s a sweet book and great to read.  We enjoyed it very much.
