Ship Ahoy by Peter Sis

October 18, 2012 by The Picture Book Review

This is a simple picture book about a boy sitting on a couch imagining that the couch is a raft, canoe, ship, ocean liner. After reading it through once I didn’t think too much of it.  It is a fine book, but nothing that blew me away.  My son, however, had me reread this book with him four times.  The only reason we didn’t go for a fifth is that it was his nap time.  I am sure we’ll be […]

Asiago by Adam McHeffey

October 18, 2012 by The Picture Book Review

Asiago is a fun and wonderful book for my son.  He loves it!  I love it!  Together we enjoy reading this book. About the book:  Asiago is a little vampire who lives with his uncle Gouda.  (Cute, right?)  One day Asiago’s non-vampire friends invite him to go to the beach with him.  Unfortunately, sun, garlic, and wooden stakes are the three things that are bad for vampires and Asiago has run-ins with all three at the beach.  Well, Asiago doesn’t […]

Where’s My Mummy? by Carolyn Crimi and illustrated by John Manders

October 18, 2012 by The Picture Book Review

Halloween is coming up.  This will by my kiddo’s first year trick-or-treating.  I think we’re going to dress him up as an excavator or some kind of construction vehicle.  We’ll see how it all works out.  If all else fails, maybe I can wrap him in toilet paper and call him a mummy? We’ve been reading some Halloween-themed books these days.  Where’s My Mummy?  is one of his current favorites.  This book is about a little mummy that plays hide-and-seek […]

Midsummer Knight by Gregory Rogers

October 17, 2012 by The Picture Book Review

So far, one of my absolute favorite picture books is The Hero of Little Street which is also by Gregory Rogers.  My son and I “read” it daily.  We’ve created our own words and dialogue to it and it is a lot of fun.  I even had the pleasure of nominating it for a Cybils Award. I checked out Midsummer Knight because Gregory Rogers created it.  Interestingly enough, he has some of the same characters in Midsummer Knight as in […]

Just Being Audrey by Margaret Cardillo and Illustrated by Julia Denos

October 17, 2012 by The Picture Book Review

This is a pretty straight-forward book about the life of Audrey Hepburn with the less than savory parts glossed over or omitted.  This makes a lot of sense because it is, after all, a children’s book. It is simply written and nicely illustrated.  If you like Audrey Hepburn, I’m sure you’ll like this book. What surprises me is how much my son likes this book.  He has no idea who Audrey Hepburn is.  He’s two and he’s never watched a […]

Look! Look! Look! at Sculpture: By Nancy Elizabeth Wallace

October 17, 2012 by The Picture Book Review

This is an awesome book!  The story line is simple.  A group of mice see a postcard from a museum advertising their new sculpture exhibit and go visit.  The mice are then inspired to create their own drawings and sculptures of their own. I picked this book up randomly off the new books shelf at my library and I am so happy I did.  It introduces my son (and me) to different types of sculptures in an entertaining way.  We’ve […]

CHALK by Bill Thomson

October 15, 2012 by The Picture Book Review

At first all I could think was — are these photographs that have been photoshopped?  The pictures were so clear and bright.  I was amazed when I read at the end of the book (in the fine print): “Bill Thomson embraced traditional painting techniques and meticulously painted each illustration by hand, using acrylic paint and colored pencils.  His illustrations are not photographs or computer generated images.” If you click here you can see pictures from the book on his […]

Same, Same but Different by Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw

October 15, 2012 by The Picture Book Review

This is a beautifully written and beautifully illustrated picture book.  It is about two pen pals writing to each other.  Elliot, from America, and Kailah, from India, exchange drawings and letters and introduce each other to their worlds.  They learn that their lives are the same, but different. I really enjoyed it and so did my son.  The pictures are so beautiful and rich that it constantly inspires my son to ask, “What’s that?”  He’s very engaged when we […]

Whoa, Baby, Whoa! by Grace Nichols and Illustrated by Eleanor Taylor

October 14, 2012 by The Picture Book Review

I’ve been shocked and amazed by what my 26 month old child imitates.  He’s recited verses from Iggy Peck, Architect, Barnyard Dance, and even Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin!  So the first time I read through this book with him I was a little nervous that he would imitate some of the things that the child did.  However, this has not been the case at all.  I’ve been pleasantly surprised by this book and it has become one of […]
